📺 Story Turning Points
EP 01Story Opening

A death row prisoner who cannot be executed

Iwagakure's most feared ninja gets captured. Every execution attempt fails, and the shogunate makes him a different offer.

EP 02Dispatched to Shinsenkyo

Bring back the elixir of immortality and earn a pardon

Sent to the death-laden island Shinsenkyo, paired with executioner Sagiri Yamada. The island is stranger than either expected.

EP 03Confronting Himself

Discovering that his self-image as 'the Hollow' was wrong

Fighting for his wife, the belief that he feels nothing collapses. His most human moment and his strongest moment are the same.

🎨 Visual Decoder
01
Blue kimono
→ A ninja dressed less for concealment than for period-piece gravitas — rooted in something from the past.
02
Emotionless eyes
→ Earns his epithet 'the Hollow' visually — until thoughts of Yui shift them almost imperceptibly.
03
Scars
→ The record of every execution attempt and every battle survived — a body that keeps its own history.
👥 Key Relationships
💙Wife
Yui
The first person who taught him warmth. The only reason he wants to survive.
⚔️Assigned executioner → Partner
Sagiri Yamada Asaemon
Assigned to execute him, ends up fighting beside him — and becoming the person who knows him best.
🤔 Good to Know
01The manga ran in Shonen Jump+ from 2018 to 2021; the TV anime was produced by MAPPA in 2023.
02'Gabimaru' is not his birth name — it is the title and identity given to him by Iwagakure.
03His ninja conditioning gives him extraordinary physical resilience — conventional execution methods simply don't work on him.
04One of the few ninja to possess fire-based ninjutsu techniques, making flame attacks his signature style.
💭Personality Deep Dive

Gabimaru was trained to have no feelings, and he believed it. That belief disassembles across the series, piece by piece. Cold on the surface, he is most logical when planning a mission and most emotional when thinking of his wife — and both of those versions are equally real.

  • ▸Returning to his wife Yui
  • ▸Discovering who he actually is beneath the conditioning
Fears
  • ▸Never returning to Yui
