During the Trost operation, he comes up with the plan to use Eren's Titan form to retake the supply depot. The first time his mind — not muscle — actually turns the tide.

Trapping Annie

He realizes Annie is the Female Titan before anyone else, then approaches her directly to force the reveal. The first scene that shows he can use a lie as cleanly as any weapon.

Living Bait and Inheriting the Colossal Titan

He acts as living bait to draw Bertholdt out, takes a fatal injury, and is saved only when Levi chooses him over Erwin. He wakes up as the new Colossal Titan — and carries that weight for the rest of the series.
